High self-esteem is the key to confidence, so nurture yourself as you would any person you love.

GIVE YOURSELF frequent pep talks. Your brain registers a compliment better if spoken out loud.

KEEP YOUR BRAIN fed with images of your confident behaviour. Visualise yourself handling difficult situations with confidence.

STAND, WALK AND SIT as though someone is pulling a string through the centre of your scalp.

DON'T LET YOURSELF BE KNEE-JERKED into hasty action. Form a habit of playing for time. Prepare yourself and breathe deeply before responding.

ENSURE THAT YOUR GOALS edge you slightly out of your comfort zone every day.

REWARD YOURSELF for effort as well as achievement.
