How does he manage? Classified website boss - Jim Buckmaster Craigslist

WHEN DID YOU BECOME A MANAGER?

In 2000. I used to live a monkish existence - cutting my own hair, making my own mittens, and living in unheated communal housing. I posted my resume on Craigslist in 1999, looking for programming work in San Francisco. The site's founder, Craig Newmark, saw it and brought me in. The company was run by consensus, a fuzzy kind of non-management, and I took on the duties that weren't getting done. Within a year it made sense to start calling me CEO.

WHAT DOES MANAGEMENT MEAN TO YOU?

My goal is to make the site as useful as possible, not setting sales goals or chasing market share. So I don't need to be a charismatic leader telling everyone to work harder. I don't like meetings, so we don't have them. People stay on the same page using chat-rooms and instant messaging. They can show up when they want. But even the most introverted techie likes to have people around to withdraw from.
