I'm a former show jumper, and started teaching horse whispering in 1995. We've now helped 3,000 students. I'd met Monty Roberts, the original horse whisperer, in 1993 by sheer chance, in a French petrol station. He became my mentor. Soon people started asking me for help managing their horses, and it just wasn't feasible. So we used our best students to create a network of recommended horse trainers.
- What does management mean to you?
It's all about understanding and communication. Horses were always my thing. People weren't. But in running my business I've learnt that most principles apply to both. Horses respond to body language. You have to act confident, even if you're not, otherwise you'll send out the wrong message. If they don't see you as a leader, they can become even more anxious. And you're crazy to get angry with horses. You have to get on their wavelength. People are the same. But horses couldn't care less whether someone is the boss or the secretary - their response is all down to how you do the job.
- What do you like/dislike about your job?
I love getting up in the morning, and I like managing people. But I can end up with five things to do at once. I get a lot of release by doing demonstrations abroad. I work with the horses, and someone else runs around with furrowed brow.
