Earning an unhealthy buck

As if the idea of working from home wasn't already attractive enough, along comes news that may make you reluctant to ever set foot in an office again: 71% of office workers apparently believe their dirty workspace is making them ill.

The report brings ominous warnings of 'unpleasant organisms' (and no, it doesn't mean your bosses), 'untold amounts of microscopic germs and bacteria', and 'a huge range of bugs and viruses, from e-coli to salmonella'. And these potential killers are apparently living it up beneath our very noses, mainly in unhygienic computer keyboards. An unsettling thought. Indeed, this writer is now peering down between his keys onto what could easily be the microscopic equivalent of a three-day Ibiza foam party.

But it's not just sloppy cleaning that's putting us at risk. Unforgivable workplace habits such as sneezing without covering mouths, scratching one's head, picking spots and digging things out of the bin without washing hands all have 'damaging consequences' claims the report (commissioned by Durable UK, a company selling, surprise surprise, computer cleaning products), not least a resultant epidemic of sick-days. And with 90% of us using our desks as a place to eat lunch and snacks, we're basically asking for trouble. MT offers three possible solutions. 1: barricade yourself in at home with your Blackberry; 2: pester your boss for that radiation protection suit; or 3: knuckle down and keep your desk clean.
