Many employees experience major conflicts between work and family as a result of companies failing to take into account socio-demographic changes over the past 20 years, such as large numbers of women joining the labour market and increases in divorce and single-parent families.

Employers should become more family-responsible to foster better professionals, spouses, parents and citizens.

 It is noted that the family is the place where important competencies that modern companies need are developed, including helpfulness, teamwork, negotiation, delegation, empathy and leadership. Research showing that MBA graduates rate work-life balance ahead of money also suggests companies should be more family-friendly to attract and retain scarce talent.

Businesses range in their attitudes: some seeing work-family policies only as a marketing strategy to attract employees and customers, and as a way to improve and preserve corporate efficiency; others identifying their organisational values with those of their employees.
