Green Business Awards 2009: Environmental management - Overall environmental management

Last Updated: 09 Oct 2013

Bovis Lend Lease is a leading project management and construction company operating in more than 30 countries. It employs 8,000, 1,800 of them in the UK. The firm has high-quality environmental management procedures. It achieved ISO 14001 certification of its environmental management system in 2002. Its sustainability data is internally audited, then subject to external validation. In 2008, it established a multi-stakeholder group to review performance in this area.

Bovis Lend Lease's EMS covers design and construction operations. Each project develops and implements a site-specific environmental management plan and is subject to regular internal audits. Every site project has a sustainability co-ordinator.

An accreditation scheme called BuildingConfidence audits suppliers' environmental impacts, with the aim of improving supply-chain sustainability performance. Other construction firms have since joined the scheme.

Staff are given sustainability training, and senior non-environmental staff also have sustainability targets. The executive leadership team committed to reduce carbon emissions from business travel by 10% in 12 months. Every member of staff must commit to at least one personal sustainability target at every review.

Current focus areas are a 'lights out' policy, which is expected to save up to 4% of carbon emissions, and a waste action plan. In the second half of 2008, 77% of waste was diverted from landfill, up from a baseline of 60% and on track to hit a target of 88% diversion by 2010. During 2008, just over 75% of timber used was from Forest Stewardship Council certified sources or was recycled. Bovis Lend Lease aims for all key construction materials to be independently credibly certified for sustainability performance by 2010.

The company aims to deliver BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) 'Excellent' design on all projects by 2010. In 2008, 23% of projects were expected to achieve this standard and 41% to achieve a 'Very Good' rating.

Bovis Lend Lease aims to cut carbon emissions by 20% from 2008 to 2010, including Scope 1 and 2 and business travel.
