EasyJet CEO Carolyn McCall says you need to do your research before asking for a pay rise. Advising people at MT's Inspiring Women conference, she said: 'I would not talk to other people in the company, I would benchmark outside at similar jobs. And then I would do it in an extremely positive way - how much I liked where I was, and then I'd say 'but I think I deserve a rise because'. And I would justify and rationalise it.'
Speaking yesterday, McCall also gave her tips for coping with difficult shareholders, like notoriously disruptive founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou - 'Grow a very thick skin and don't take anything personally'. She also gave us her advice on other key issues affecting women and their rise to the top.
Carolyn McCall picked up MT's Inspiring Women award at the MT Inspiring Women conference 2013.
