Employer of the Future
The world of work is changing faster than ever. From flexible working and the rise of wellness, through ‘office anywhere’ technology, to AI, the gig economy, and the demise of permanent employment. The portfolio career is taking over.
Any one of these changes alone would present employers with a significant challenge. Together they amount to a tsunami of change that will be extremely challenging for organisations and those that lead them to manage.
And yet, so much of what we read about these changes looks at the issues from the individual employee’s point of view. That’s important too of course, but the purpose of the MT Employer of the Future programme, in association with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, is to take a view from where the employers sit.
The old certainties of employment – and the employer/employee relationship – are vanishing. Seen from one angle, it looks like we are swapping security for insecurity and permanence for contingency. But seen from another, it’s the end of paternalistic organisations calling the shots, and the beginning of freedom to work when, where and how you want. But like all great periods of change and uncertainty, this one offers tremendous opportunities as well as substantial risks.
How do you prepare your people, your organisation and yourself so that you are best positioned to minimise those risks and make the most of the opportunities? How can businesses ensure they remain relevant and able to attract and develop the best talent? How can they foster the culture of agility, flexibility and responsiveness required? And do it all safely, to boot?
In short, businesses need to learn to thrive on uncertainty and ensure that they are not only winning employers today, but also winning employers of the future.
