How he made his pile

Sean Combs, head of Bad Boy Entertainment.

Last Updated: 09 Oct 2013

Who is he? Also known as Puff Daddy, Puffy and P Diddy, he is a rapper, record producer, label boss, fashion designer, marketing company chief, restaurateur and J-Lo's former squeeze. His Bad Boy Entertainment empire has annual sales of about $300 million.

How did he make his millions? Combs followed business studies with an internship at Uptown Records, then started Bad Boy in 1993 with two artists. The label has now sold 75 million records worldwide. His production for Whitney Houston raised his profile, helping him launch Sean Jean menswear. He recently sold a 50% stake in Bad Boy to Warner Music for $30 million.

The secret of his success? Combs was one of the first artists to market urban culture to the mainstream while retaining credibility on the streets. He's a talented businessman, but with a dark side of arrests and high-profile feuds. It's an unlikely winning formula – Bloomingdale's stocks Sean John, not MC Hammer trousers.
