We had our suspicions Google Glass was more hyped than the Chiltern Firehouse's 'secret bar', and now here's proof: Gartner's latest Hype Cycle report, which shows where various technologies are when you compare expectations of them with their actual usefulness.
It makes for interesting reading: among the most hyped technologies at the moment are the Internet of Things, wearable tech and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Meanwhile, those which have plunged into the 'Trough of Disillusionment' are Near-Field Communications (paying for things via a chip planted in your mobile phone), cloud computing and augmented reality.
But there is hope: among the technologies slogging their way up the 'Slope of Enlightenment' are 3D scanners and gesture control, which suggests many of the technologies we see as over-hyped at the moment could yet become an important part of our everyday lives.
Just as long as no-one forces us to become a Glasshole...
