Figures published on Wednesday showing London house prices have risen 20% since 2007 - 18% in the past three months - struck misery into the hearts of non-property owners.

With even the likes of uber-posh estate agent Savills questioning the sustainability of house price growth, whether or not it's a bubble isn't really a question any more.

Here are Nationwide's figures stretching back to 1973, showing two distinct house price calamities: the first in the late 1980s/early 1990s; the second in 2007. What everyone wonders is what the curve will look like this time: will it be a 1980s-esque slope, or a 2007-esque cliff?
