Know your team. A one-size-fits-all approach is unlikely to work.
Don't just incentivise, inspire. Targets are all well and good, but if you really want to fire up your team, you'll need to be a bit more creative. Come up with a company vision so staff understand 'why' as well as 'how'.
Give them a slice of the action. Involve staff in developing the vision and they're more likely to strive towards it and stay focused on the ultimate goal.
Play to your strengths. Find out what your team members' strong points are and work with them to find a way to bring them into everything they do. They'll feel more energised and talented as a result.
Relinquish some control. Staff like to feel autonomous, so give your team members the responsibility and ownership they need to stay engaged.
Spend time with your team. Make the effort to engage on a one-to-one level, whether it's by taking them out for lunch or briefing them face-to-face rather than by e-mail.
Be human. Smile, laugh, and show your sense of humour - it will help to lift spirits and keep energy levels high.
