How she Made her Pile: Kate Moss - Supermodel and rock chick

Who is she? The Croydon girl who spearheaded the 'waif' look that came to characterise models of the early '90s. She's now the world's most famous model, worth a cool £45m.

Last Updated: 31 Aug 2010

How did she make her millions? Spotted at 14 in JFK Airport by Sarah Doukas, head of Storm Model Management, Moss made her catwalk debut at 15. Her leading role in a Calvin Klein campaign at 18 cemented her position as a fashion icon. One of the first of the 'heroin chic' models, Moss is thought to have earned £30m in 2006 alone. Topshop paid her £3m to design her own line this year.

The secret of her success? Being the 'world's most beautiful woman' certainly helped, but Moss' ability to combine commercial success with an edgy, rebellious image has made her impervious to scandal. Footage of her apparently vacuuming lines of cocaine during her troubled rock-star lover Pete Doherty's recording session led to brief uproar, and more work.
