It's very rare that Stat of the Day gets a figure as pleasingly symmetrical as this to run through its calculation nodes, but here you have it: it's Twitter's fifth birthday today, and it turns out that in the last month, its users have, on average, sent 140m 140-character messages a day. Good, isn't it? It's like 20/10/2010 all over again...

Anyway, the site’s seen particularly rapid growth over the past two years - in fact, during the same period last year, 50m tweets were sent.  

Other impressive stats the site posted to celebrate its birthday include the fact that it took 3 years, 2 months and 1 day to reach the billionth tweet. Now a billion tweets are sent every week - a staggering figure. #happybirthdayTwitter...
