Ding, dong merrily on high, in heav’n the bells are ringing. Or is that the ringing of tills, as shoppers flood high streets in preparation for the busiest shopping day of the year tomorrow? According to figures from shopping comparison site Kelkoo, 11 million shoppers will spend £128 each on Christmas presents – more than £1bn in total, or about £1.5m a minute.

The average family spend, suggests Kelkoo, will be £700, while online sales will rise by 16% to £13.4bn over Christmas. Although it added that it expected high street sales to fall by about 2% compared with last year. So a merrier Christmas for some than others…
