Stat of the day: £220m

The amount Endemol and Channel 5 have spent on the re-launch of Big Brother.

After ‘weeks of speculation’ (according to the Mirror, anyway) Big Brother launched last night to a, er, lukewarm reception, at best. The critics’ reviews were, as one might expect, hardly overwhelmingly positive, with the Telegraph’s Michael Hogan describing the line-up of contestants as ‘barrel-scraping.’

The show’s bosses will no doubt be disappointed with the comments, as the channel had pulled out all the stops for the re-launch.  Big Brother’s new presenter Brian Dowling told the BBC this week that Endemol and Channel 5 had spent £220m on the programme so far, and the channel’s proprietor Richard Desmond said he hoped for 20m viewers.  ‘Anything less is, you know, we beat people up,’ he said at the programme’s launch on Monday. (Note: he was joking. We hope.)
