Is this becoming a world of tweeters (or 'Twits', as the more polite members of the MT team have occasionally been know to refer to them)? Some 25bn tweets were sent in 2010 – up by a staggering 17bn from last year’s 8bn. An estimated 200m people now use the micro-blogging site, with 100m signing up within the last 12 months alone.

According to Twitter, the top trending topics for 2010 were the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the World Cup, the film Inception and vuvuzelas – while ‘pop sensation’ (the Metro’s choice of phrase - but 'twit' works just as well) Justin Bieber also made an appearance in the top 10.
