The number of Subway stores worldwide. The chain says it's now bigger than McDonalds.

Last Updated: 06 Nov 2012
McDonalds has been overtaken as the world's biggest fast food franchise, Subway says.

The sandwich chain, a privately-owned company, said it overtook the golden arches at some point in 2010, as it spread even further across Asia and opened its first shop in Vietnam. The sandwich chain now has 33,749 outlets worldwide - 1,000 more than McDonalds.

McDonalds has come back with an argument slapped between two halves of a sesame-seed bap: saying that it's quality, not quantity, that counts. A spokesperson said the burger giant is 'committed to being better, not just bigger'. Even more important to it, we'd suggest, is that it still leads when it comes to sales, reporting $24bn in revenue last year. Clearly plenty of people are still lovin' it.
