The percentage of cheques in the EU written by the French.

When it comes to payment, it's clear the French are a nation of cheque-writers - which makes it all the more surprising that French banks have just been hit by a €384.9m (£321m) fine for colluding to set an 'unjustified fee' for handling the paper payments back in 2002. French banks including BNP-Paribas, Société Générale and even La Banque de France - the French equivalent of the Bank of England - were slapped with fines. The 43 cent charge, which the banks said were to fund a move to digital processing, affected 80% of all cheques, but was abandoned in 2007 after criticism from the regulator. But while French consumers have got their revenge, it doesn't look as though they'll get their money back, according to a consumer group. Quelle domage.
