TECHKNOW: The people and products shaping your future - Smart tools - Nokia 9210 Communicator - What is it?

Last Updated: 31 Aug 2010

What is it?

A fax machine, computer, e-mailer and web browser that's also a mobile phone.

What does it do?

The Communicator's none-too-svelte exterior conceals 16Mb of memory, stripped-down Microsoft Office software for spreadsheets, word processing and PowerPoint presentations, plus internet access for e-mail, surfing and remote synchronisation of calendars and to-do lists. Everything, in fact, that the mobile worker could wish for. It has a 4096-colour LCD screen, fast internet access and the ability to store pictures from compatible digital cameras. Just don't try to put it in your pocket. At a hefty 244 grams, it will ruin the line of your suit.

What's the competition?

Mostly web-enabled PDAs from the likes of Palm, Compaq and Psion, and other mobile manufacturers that are also taking on the PDAs.

Where can I get it?

The upgraded Communicator is out this summer, priced at about pounds 300 (incl.connection).
