TECHKNOW: Smart tools - Handspring Treo 270 - What is it?

Last Updated: 31 Aug 2010

What is it?

A web-enabled mobile phone-cum-personal organiser.

What does it do?

It's a dual-band GSM mobile phone, 16Mb personal organiser and mobile internet browser, all in one discreetly styled, reasonably pocketable flip-front box. Its big, bright, colour LCD screen is streets ahead of the grey-on-grey ones usually found on PDAs, and a proper - if miniaturised - keyboard limits the amount of screen tapping needed to drive it.

Existing Palm and Handspring users will be happy to know that the Treo synchronises with their PCs using the familiar Palm Desktop and HotSync software, and has all their favourite utilities - scheduler, address book, to-do list - plus full e-mail, web and mobile phone functions.

What's the competition?

The Treo faces stiff competition in a sector fought over by all the top players. But for Palm and Handspring fans looking to upgrade, it's an obvious choice.

When can I get it?

It's available now for pounds 499 plus connection.
