TECHKNOW: Smart tools - The Iomega Hipzip - What is it?

Last Updated: 31 Aug 2010

What is it?

A digital audio player with miniature Zip disks providing the noise.

What does it do?

This gadget lets you download up to 80 minutes of MP3 music straight from your computer onto solid state 40MB 'PocketZips.' Unlike some MP3 players that 'fill up', you can continue downloading onto as many disks as you have. It plays 12 hours of music per battery charge, boasting skip-free CD-quality sound at prices a sixth cheaper than conventional flash cards. And, being Iomega, this is no entertainment-only toy. It also doubles as a PocketZip storage device for downloading and moving spreadsheets and other work data. Let go of your guilt.

What's the competition?

With dual functionality, Iomega has a real niche. Direct rivals come from CD writers and mini disks, but none of these has the additional business uses.

Where can I get it?

Direct from Iomega. At pounds 200 you'll be burning your wallet as well as your disks.
