TECHKNOW: SMART TOOLS - THE LOGITECH TRACKMAN WHEEL - What does it do?

What does it do?

Much as the iMac is the aesthete's alternative to the PC, so the trackball finds favour with those too stylish to be seen with a mouse on their desktop.

Logitech's latest offering not only looks like a tiny Gehry building, it is also wireless, communicating with your computer through a radio link, and incorporates features to make web browsing easier. Just what you'd expect from the people who brought you those curvy keyboards and webcams shaped like eyeballs.

What's the competition?

Pretty mice abound (Microsoft does some good ones, as do innumerable electronics boutiques). And wireless peripherals are starting to catch on in a big way. If you're prepared to pay over the odds to have your desk look its best, though, logitech's Trackman Wheel is hard to beat.

Where can I get it?

Electronics shops everywhere from this month, priced at pounds 50
