WHAT IS IT? A cutting-edge portable digital radio. Best known for trad-looking leather trannies, Yorkshire-based Roberts is not afraid of the latest technology. Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) offers CD-quality sound free from crackle, hiss and interference from the local minicab firm. The RD1 is one of the first standalone units that can receive both DAB and regular AM/FM too.

WHAT DOES IT DO? As well as all your analogue favourites, the RD1 offers access to the digital-only delights of BBC 7, BBC Five Live Sports Xtra and Core, Planet Rock and Prime Time, to name but a few. And a neat bit of circuitry lets you rewind the radio and play it back, so you need never again miss John Humphrys beating up the politician you love to hate.

WHAT'S THE COMPETITION? With no Sony, Toshiba et al in this market, players like Roberts and Pure have had a free hand. But when the big boys join in, prices will tumble.

WHERE CAN I GET IT? The RD1 is in the shops now, price pounds 200.
