TECHKNOW: Smart tools - Tandberg 1000 - What is it?

Last Updated: 31 Aug 2010

What is it?

A self-contained videoconferencing unit.

What does it do?

This PC-sized desktop box has everything you need to hook up in words and pictures with colleagues around the globe: camera, microphone and 12.1-inch flat-screen colour LCD monitor. You can share PowerPoint presentations or collaborate on any documents by hooking up to your PC. At 4.1kgs, it can be moved around the office easily, and if you've got a wireless LAN at work you won't need to worry about which cable goes where.

What's the competition?

Unless you splash out on top-of-the-range gear, videoconferencing can be frustrating - jerky, sub-home movie pictures and bad sound quality can leave you wishing you'd just picked up the phone instead. The Tandberg 1000 offers five-figure quality for a mid-four figure price, and its styling is way out ahead of the competition too.

Where can I get it?

It's available now for around pounds 4,250. A hefty ticket, but you'll save on airfares.
