TECHKNOW: Smart tools - The Ubinetics GSM GDA 100 - What is it?

What is it?

This 110g clip-on from the subsidiary of PA Consulting turns the humble Palm V into a mobile phone. It's what Palm piloteers everywhere have been waiting for.

What does it do?

It hooks your Palm up to the net for e-mail and web browsing on the go, as well as allowing you to synchronise with your diary back at the office.

Unlike some other net-enabled organisers, there's no fiddling about with infra-red links - the GSM 100 is a self-contained unit, so you just slot your Palm in and go. The dual-band receiver works in most European countries, and you can even use it (yawn) to make phone calls.

What's the competition?

Not much ... yet. Most other organisers require a separate mobile phone to go online. But expect to see new 'wireless connectivity' products and add-ons from all the big hand-held manufacturers over the next few months.

When can I get it?

It's out in the next few weeks for around pounds 400, excluding connection and the (probably very big) phone bills.www.ubinetics.com.
