Being highly qualified alone isn’t enough for you to hit the ground running in your first week. Getting stuck into a new job is straight forward. It’s all about understanding that you’re the new guy and you have to integrate. 'It is not about coming in with your masters degree and thinking you're above making the tea,' Officebroker says.
Here are 10 top tips:
1. Learning the tea and coffee round
As silly as it sounds, if you can make a good cup of tea or coffee, you’re on the way to becoming a well-loved member of the team.
Never assume that you’re above making the tea or washing up the dirties - everyone's had to do it at one point in their lives.
2. Getting to grips with the photocopier
Often the photocopier can be the nemesis to the newest employee. When you're entering a company at a junior level, admin is going to be a large part of your job.
Therefore, you need to get acquainted with the photocopier and you need to get it done quickly.
3. Don’t watch the clock
The key to fitting into a new job is to show you are keen to be there so one thing you mustn’t do in your first week is be a clock-watcher.
Just because you are paid to work 9 – 5:30 doesn’t mean you should come and go exactly at those times.
4. Get to grips with names
Nothing irritates people more than others not being able to remember their name, so one of your priorities on the first day should be to introduce yourself to everyone in the team and learn their name.
If you struggle with people’s names generally, find a way to overcome this, there are loads of tricks out there.
Throw yourself into as many office social events as possible outside of work, even if it is just going to the pub with everyone on Friday.
The best work comes from the teams who get along well so be outgoing, bond with your colleagues and don’t be insular.
6. Avoid the gossip
Every office has gossip, however you should avoid it like the plague when you first start out.
The last thing you want to do in a new job is a) make enemies straight away and b) be seen as a blabbermouth who can’t be trusted.
7. Ask lots of questions
You may have an excellent degree from a brilliant university. However, as a novice you will be learning as you go.
If you’re not sure about something, ask: it will not be seen as a sign of weakness but as an eagerness to learn.
8. Get stuck in
Being new doesn’t mean you have to hide behind your desk and not be taken as a serious member of the team.
It's important that you are seen to be keen so don’t be afraid to contribute in team meetings especially if you have something valid to be said. Employers would much rather you spoke out than stayed hidden away.
9. Cake is always a winner
Everyone loves cake and he or she who provides it will be loved forever. Obviously you’re not going to get the sack if you fail to bring a sweet treat on your first day but it is a nice touch.
Employers want to see that you are happy that you are starting this new job so smile and be happy.
If you walk in on your first day with a face like thunder then the only message you are sending out is that you’d rather be somewhere else.
