Ten Top Tips: Make your business card stand out from the crowd

Despite the rise of the internet, the humble business card is still an important sales tool. Printed.com's Nick Green has ten ways to make sure your personal calling good looks good and reflects your brand.

1. Quality is key

Make sure your business card is made of a good quality card. Not only will this ensure that it doesn’t bend in the recipients wallet but it will also reflect on the quality of your company. Choosing a thicker paper stock for your card will ensure it has a professional feel which will make a good first impression.

2. Think about colours

It goes without saying that in order to make a card stand out, colour is a key ingredient. But rather than jumping in with a random assortment of colours, think about how people read colours and how a specific colour will reflect upon you and your brand. For example, black portrays authority and professionalism, whereas orange is seen as creative and energetic.

3. Represent

Although you want your card to be eye-catching, it also needs to be representative of what you do. If you are a company whose main focus is within the financial industries, think about how this is communicated on your business card. For example, do you look professional, experienced and authoritative or does your card include colours and fonts which look too modern and gimmicky, a look better suited to a creative agency?

4. Include accurate information

It sounds blindingly obvious but all information on your business card needs to be fully up to date and accurate. You would be surprised at how often I have received cards with incorrect direct dials or outdated mobile numbers.

5. Think green

There is a wide range of paper to choose from when picking a business card but if you can, always chose an environmentally friendly version. Not only will this reduce your personal carbon footprint, it also communicates to the recipient that you are a responsible and conscientious business.

6. Experiment

With most business cards being the same shape and size, it can be difficult to stand out. In order to be different, experiment with these factors to get something special. For example, don’t necessarily go for the standard size, add rounded corners and even try experimenting with unusual shapes.

7. Use all of the space

Business cards often only include content on the front of the card which is a complete waste of the limited space. Perhaps include a quirky statement or fact about yourself on the back of the card. Not only will this break the ice and act as a conversation starter, but also makes you more memorable.

8. Incorporate social media

Today so many people use social media to get in touch with colleagues and friends so it is essential that you communicate your social media handles on your business card.  Incorporate social media icons as well as your company’s web links to demonstrate your digital savvy.

9. Innovation

Today there are some really innovative paper stocks on the market such as holographic paper which produces a 3D effect. These are great if you work in the creative industries but don’t get carried away with products like this if it doesn’t reflect your company and brand values.

10. Take advantage of digital technology

Digital printing companies offer great value for money and flexibility in what they can produce. Take advantage of this and be experimental. Try different colour variations on four of five cards to show variety and creativity. This can also be great if your company targets several audiences – you can have a slightly adapted card for each.
