I have always been extremely goal-focused. So at its simplest, success for me is reaching and over-achieving your goals. Yet that also begs the question of what your goals are. Both personally and in a business, it's important to have balanced goals. I'm very focused on my career goals but I try hard to balance that with my hobbies - for example, I want to race a horse round Aintree, and I have a simple goal of having a dog! At Tesco, we work hard to set balanced objectives for our teams by defining our goals and successes in four different areas: finance, customers, operations, and our people.
For me, the measure of success both in life and at a corporate level is to achieve across the board rather than over-achieving in one area and falling down in all the others.
