Companies are judged on their performance in nine categories.

There is no single achievement that makes a company admirable.

It is always a combination of factors that contribute to a company's standing.

Some organisations have financial strength but lack the capacity to innovate.

Others can market well but are unable to hold on to their most valued employees.

In these tables we look at the battles for excellence across different sectors in nine important categories. Tesco, Britain's most admired company, features prominently. The only other retailer of food to feature in the top three is Marks & Spencer, which scores highly for its community and environmental work.

What is remarkable is the broad spread of organisations that excel. Anita Roddick's Body Shop continues to take top honours for its environmental work. At the other end of the spectrum Gallagher, the manufacturer of Silk Cut cigarettes, is admired for the quality of its marketing.

Financial services companies do not feature much, a sign of the disappearance of some banks into foreign hands and the unpopularity and poor performance of others. The one notable exception is Schroders.

Win Bischoff's investment bank has managed to attract one of the three highest scores in three categories, including the quality of its management, its ability to attract and retain talent and the quality of its services.

All this at a time when its rivals have been losing credibility and key management members on a regular basis.

Cadbury Schweppes is another organisation that has scored highly in several areas, a testament to the renewed vigour and momentum in the organisation. Cadbury Schweppes needs to be good. It is still figuring out how best to deal with some of the biggest, sharpest and most aggressive companies in the world: America's soft drinks giants.

Its peer group believe it is going to win in at least some areas. The quality of its products and services are even more highly rated than SmithKline Beecham's. It has good relations with the community and its value as a long term investment pushes Unilever, the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods company into second place.

At the bottom of the pile there are two companies with serious image problems among their peers. Sears, the retail group, is seen as a poor manager of its assets and a poor long term investment.

But the beleaguered name that crops up most frequently is United Assurance, singled out as the poorest performer in no less than five separate areas.
