Incidents of businessmen being taken hostage abroad are increasing. In 1993, 20 foreign nationals were kidnapped, according to Control Risks Information Services.
Control Risks has issued advice to potential targets. Much of it is common sense: keep calm, avoid eye contact, keep mental notes about whereabouts and captors' routines, and eat and drink all that is supplied - almost all, that is. 'Avoid coffee and alcohol,' it advises. Managing director Nigel Churton, explains: 'They are stimulants and make you want to go to the loo. In a hostile situation you must keep a low profile, the last thing you want to do is pee in your knickers.'
