Congratulations to Don "Curly" Humphries, the 69-year-old garage owner who boasted that during the Gulf war he sold the cheapest petrol in Britain. Curly recently sold his Action chain to Gulf Oil, walking away with some £20 million.
A former used-car salesman, Curly was warned by a senior oil company executive when he embarked on his cut-price campaign four years ago that he would soon become "a very poor man" as a result of his presumptuous actions.
Instead motorists flocked to his 32 stations, where petrol was 24p a gallon cheaper than at major oil company outlets, and Curly was soon importing half a million barrels a week from Rotterdam by chartered tanker.
Curly had the last laugh on the unnamed executive. He can now go on to enjoy a well earned retirement, complete with Rolls-Royce and personalised number plate VPM1.
