Twenty eight years ago Ford Advanced Vehicles started building the GT40. Six years and four Le Mans victories later production ceased.

Four of the original engineers have been coaxed from retirement.

The bait? A project by GT Developments to produce 50 replicas. Modifications mean that instead of the original 240 mph, the new car's optimum is a stately 200 mph. This racing pedigree, unlikely to find favour with the constabulary, is intended to seduce drivers and investors. MD Simon Osborne promises those with £250,000 but without a racing pedigree, experience in road-handling. Not a crash course, we trust.
