If your personnel director has begun to look a bit tired, it may be the result of an increasingly onerous legislative burden that he or she has to manage.
According to a survey of 187 companies nationwide, employment law and health and safety legislation, at 67% and 62%, respectively, head a list of things likely to keep directors awake at night. Among respondents based in the South West, anxiety rises to epidemic proportions with 90% registering their concern over employment law in particular.
The only traditional personnel issue that comes close to matching those levels of interest nationwide is competition for high-calibre staff (61%).
The North West confirms its reputation as an earnings blackspot, with 62% in that area concerned about wage levels, compared with 45% overall.
On the plus side, the old British disease appears to have been cured - or to be in remission, at any rate - as industrial action rates a meagre 11% on the worry scale of personnel departments.
