"The product of experience," claimed Hoover of the cleaning heads for its Aquamaster three-in-one wet/dry machine. Now patents judge Mr Justice Aldous has ruled that Hoover was cleaning up on the profits from someone else's experience.

Alan Brazier, the virtuoso of the VAX, is set to receive a seven-figure sum for infringement of the patent on his invention. Brazier, whose proud motto is "Veni, vidi, vici, vaxi", has once again proved a veritable Caesar of the vacuum cleaner business.

But, with peace restored, will he consider a new legend? Something like "VAX vobiscum"? A milk churn on Brazier's farm acted as the prototype machine. Now he is determined to prevent anyone from milking the profits from his unique invention.
