Keeping Britain's cars within legal speed limits would cost a fortune in policing. So at a recent Transport Research Group conference, a children's rights lobby called for technological solutions as well. 'Variable speed limiters' - roadside radio beacons and engine-mounted sensors - could keep cars below 40mph, reducing excesses that kill. Ford UK chairman and chief executive Ian McAllister said that fitting such devices on his cars would be no problem.

Ford's Jaguar XKR is a first step in that direction. When you're driving on a motorway using its cruise control, it will brake automatically if a car pulls out in front of you.
