There is apparently a pub high in the Yorkshire Pennines which is the modern equivalent of Delphi. Whenever the parliamentary press lobby asked awkward questions of "sources" close to the former Prime Minister, the words were: "I can assure you, they're not talking about the exchange rate mechanism at the Three Ferrets in Hebden Bridge."
Intrigued by this reference, staff at Management Today trekked off to consult the oracle. Alas, to no avail. For, like the lobby itself, the Three Ferrets seems officially not to exist. A bottle of champagne to the first reader - Sir Bernard Ingham apart - who can identify it.
