In April next year British business will experience its first Take Our Daughters to Work Day, when parents, friends and relations will be encouraged to do just that and let a girl between 11 and 15 shadow them for a normal working day. The campaign aims to foster self esteem and broaden the horizons of girls who might otherwise be denied direct access to the workplace. The idea originated in the US where its organisers, the Ms Foundation for Women, claimed that the first day succeeded 'beyond its wildest dreams' - last April one million girls participated.

Those wishing to participate over here - the list already includes British Gas, London Undergound and B and Q - should contact Diana Skeete or Helen Brown at the Office of Public Management on 071 837 9600.
